What activities should we do during child visits?

Imagine you’re a newly single dad who doesn’t have physical custody of your child. However, you do get to spend every other weekend with your son or daughter.

Since your visitation time is limited, you clearly want to make the time as meaningful as possible, but you’re not sure what activities are the best. What follows is a list of things you can do with your child during your visits.

Activities ideas for spending time with a child

When selecting an activity to do with your son or daughter, it’s important to select something that both of you will enjoy. However, it’s also a good idea to stay open to things you haven’t tried before. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be surprised by finding something new that you love.

Here are a few activity ideas to get you started in the right direction:

Play a game: Do you remember spending a rainy afternoon playing monopoly with your parents as a kid? Monopoly is just as fun now as it was then, so if you have more than two people and your child is old enough, you might want to try a Monopoly day. Alternatively, maybe there’s another game you and your child will enjoy. Perhaps you play cards, Candyland, Shoots & Ladders, Uno, dominoes, checkers, chess, a puzzle or try picking out a new game together at a local store.

Prepare something to eat: Every child will enjoy spending time with dad cooking something up in the kitchen. You can even decide with your child what you’re going to make, find a recipe on the internet together, go grocery shopping together, cook together and even wrap up what you made in beautiful little packages to give away to family and friends. This is a fun way to spend a day no matter what time of year it happens to be.

Make a craft or art project together: Another idea involves making some kind of craft or project together. Maybe you write and illustrate a book together. You can both draw and color and write out the story. There are an unlimited number of other craft or art projects you might enjoy with your child as well. Get creative and ask your child for ideas.

Make sure you can spend quality time with your child

Some fathers and mothers in Colorado are unable to spend any quality time with their child because they are being denied their parental rights. If you are in a position like this, you might be able to assert your legal right to spend time with your child in court. Every situation is different when it comes to child custody, but the more you know about the law — and how it applies to your case — the better chances you’ll have of getting the child custody you deserve.
